How does storytelling impact memory retention and learning?

Our brain loves stories so use the linking technique.

This is an example of creating a story to help remember 3 countries, linked alphabetically, Palau, Palestine and Panama. The capital of Palau is Ngerulmud. Picture a dog eating Pal (a dog food). Ngerulmud is quite tricky to remember so break it up into Ger Rul Mud: For Ger have an image of Geraldine from The Vicar of Dibley. There is a funny scene where she jumps into a muddy hole, so I have an active linking story where the dog (Pal) pulls her along (action), she is waving a large (exaggeration) ruler and she trips into a muddy puddle. Palestine is next so she walks up to Buckingham Palace along the Mall leading a ram as Ramallah is the capital. Ramallah means 'God's Height' so it helps to remember that Ra and Allah are both kings in heaven and at the palace, the third king, Charles, places a Panama hat on her head. So 3 countries have been linked into one silly story. Of course, if the ‘Vicar of Dibley’ means nothing to you then imagine a German for Ger.
